OR de GeORge Royal Reserve – Celebration in a Bottle

At Château George 7 we have always believed that wine is much more than a drink that tastes great and goes with food — it’s about the moments and memories we create when we share it. That’s why we have made OR de GeORge Royal Reserve - crafted to celebrate the people who matter and to savour those occasions we never want to forget.

Here are 7 (we love 7 if you hadn’t noticed) questions you might have about this very special wine:

What does OR de GeORge taste like?

Think rich and velvety - smooth, full, and mouth-coating, with dark chocolate and coffee flavours intermingled with rich dark fruits and yet vibrant and powerful - each sip feels like a moment of indulgence. Think all the best attributes of a 100% merlot wine. Some wine critics have tasted it and loved it – they also mention flavours of slate, oyster shell, cedar, ink and liquorice.  There is a lot going on!

When do you recommend we open this special wine?

This is a wine for celebration. Open it with close friends and family, gather around the table, and make the moment memorable—whether it’s Christmas, an anniversary, or a long-awaited visit. It also makes a wonderful gift for any wine lover who delights in discovering something different and distinctive knowing it is limited in quantity.

What food does it go with?

Honestly, it’s wonderful all on its own—that glass you pour just to spoil yourself and savour the moment. But we believe Or de GeORge will often be drunk with food as part of a celebration meal: roasted meats at Thanksgiving or Christmas, or a duck breast with a glossy fruit sauce. If you are not a meat-eater, then try it with sumptuous veggie dishes such as Portobello steaks or a black truffle risotto.

Know that every bottle comes with a side order of love. Whatever the occasion and whatever you are eating, use it to toast the special people in your life and to celebrate them.

Is this Royal Reserve ready to drink now?

It will be ready to open from late 2025, 15 months after it was bottled. And it will be on Sally’s table this Christmas. But patience will be rewarded, and it will continue to evolve beautifully for years to come. We always wanted to make wines that were complex yet drinkable relatively young. Given the layers of flavours in this wine, it is extremely approachable now if you just cannot wait and you have someone in mind you want to share it with!

How did OR de GeORge come about?

This is a new wine from Château George 7, created only in exceptional years—and 2022 was exactly that. We had dreamed of making a special cuvée for those rare moments when everything aligns and the fruit is too good not to create something extraordinary. 2022 delivered just that.

It was also a historic year, when Queen Elizabeth II died after her remarkable reign. With the Château’s name hinting at her great-grandson Prince George (who will be King George VII one day), it felt fitting to dedicate the wine as OR de GeORge — a rare gem by Château George 7. This Royal Reserve is both a tribute to an extraordinary Queen and a wine to mark life’s most meaningful moments, creating memories to treasure.

We have not made it since 2022 (yet).  The 2023 vintage is really wonderful too but as the first Royal Reserve was not finished, it was too soon to make another. 2025 might be the next time we make it. Watch this space!

What makes OR de GeORge so special?

Well apart from the taste which we have already established is delicious and lingers on the tongue:

  • It is only made in exceptional years and only in limited quantities from a small parcel beside the winery. The vintage will determine whether we decide to make it and if so, how much. There are 2400 bottles of the 2022 Royal Reserve. Every bottle is numbered by hand and the numbers recorded so that buyers can choose the numbers they want - as long as they are not already taken!

  • We invested in a 3,000-litre oak cask just for this wine’s ageing. And that’s what’s given it its richness and distinctiveness. After carefully managed fermentation in 500 litre French oak barrels, it then went into the oak cask for 18 months.

  • Even the label hints at the richness and story inside:

-      The embossed gold reflects the name of OR (gold in French).

-       The design features the royal three feathers, the symbol of the Prince of Wales. Today that title belongs to Prince William, but one day the title will pass to his son George—who will later become King George VII after the reign of his father.

From the first look through to the last drop, you can tell this wine is for special moments—a reminder that we all deserve to be treated royally from time to time.

How can I get OR de GeORge?

For its launch, the Royal Reserve is only available here at the winery—when you visit and buy it in person—or through the Château George 7 Wine Club, where members get exclusive access.

OR de GeORge isn’t just a wine — it’s a celebration in a bottle.

Created for life’s big moments, to share with the people who matter most.
